...And Lots of Drops to Drink

I just thought I would "piggyback" on Shan's post by telling a little story.
I have had the same obgyn for both births.  When in labor, my doctor advises that the woman in labor cannot drink any water, only ice chips.  WHAT an inconvenience!  First of all, labor is not really one of my favorite things to do. Second of all, not being able to drink anything while in the middle of the hardest workout of your life?????  That is crazy, and so very tortuous.  I remember distinctly both times when my doctor walked into the delivery room for the first time while in labor.  He brought in the most beautiful thing I had ever seen- my hospital water bottle:

This bottle gave me the motivation  to carry on through all the other pain that I endured that day.  (I guess technically the water bottle is the 2nd most beautiful thing my doctor brought me that day.  My 2 daughter are the best!  and the most beautiful ever!  But I digress)  What a wonderful feeling to have that cool, delicious water go down my throat for the first time in what felt like ages!
And today, that water bottle is still helping me out.  I fill and refill that thing countless times per day- and Shan, I feel ya on the water thing- nothing beats St. Louis water!  Right now the straw is stained pink because I have been drinking crystal light with it.  My favorite right now is the pomegranate immunity, it really does satisfy the sweet drink craving.  I am lucky that I never really liked soda, just don't like the taste!  Drinking water is so key in losing weight.  There are times when I catch myself about to go through the pantry to see what munchies I can eat, and then I remember to just drink water- it helps fill me up!  Here is more on water's role in helping lose weight!

PS. The skinnietwinnies will unite next wekkend in Dallas!  So excited!  We will be saving our points so we can go get a margarita or 2!

Water water, everywhere...

Another huge tool in losing weight is monitoring your beverage intake. To all soda drinkers out there: stop! There are 100-150 calories, depending on the soda, in each can. That is a lot for something that isn't going to fill you up or contribute to a healthy lifestyle. About 2 years ago, I altogether switched from drinking regular soda to diet soda. So while this did cut down on my calorie intake, it was still not healthy for my body. There are actually added sugars and chemicals that induce hunger in some diet sodas, which is not good.

So, I try and drink as much water as I possibly can. At my job, we have bottled water readily available. At our apartment we have a Brita filter that is always full and ready to go. If you live in say, St. Louis, you probably don't need Brita- the water is excellent there. If you live in say, Atlanta, you might notice that the water tastes a little bit like dirt. But I digress...

I also have bought the Crystal Light packets and imitation packets that go very nicely with a bottle of water. That helps chug it down when you need a bit of a sweet fix. My favorite is pictured (Wild Strawberry). I have tried to limit my diet soda to weekends only, and hope to eventually phase it out of my life completely. We shall see.

Alcohol is a whole other story. My only advice- if you want that beer when you get home from work, fight it. If you are just sitting around the house, drinking a beer, where is the fun in that? Save the calories for the weekend, or a girls night out, when you can drink with friends. Easier said than done, I know. But, I have to say, since this biggest loser competition has started, our refrigerator has been low on the Bud Lights. And that is totally fine with me!
Oh, and a small aside, I lost one more lb, putting me up to 5.2 lbs total. I think next week I will have a bigger loss, based on the fact that I drank A LOT of water right before I weighed in this week. So here is hoping!

Disappointed, again!

I lost 1.2 lbs since my last weigh in.  Woop-di-doo.  This week I worked out 5 out of 7 days, and one of those days I worked out twice!  I stuck to the diet, I did not go over my alotted calories, so why am I not losing more?  I started weighing in for this blog the same time my hub and I started Biggest Loser.  So I have officially lost 2.2 lbs in these two weeks, and he has lost 8lbs.  8 POUNDS!!!  It drives me crazy to think that I have been busting my behind to see results and get hardly anything.  Good thing I have this blog to motivate me.  If it wasn't for Skinnie Twinnies and Biggest Loser, I would have thrown in the towel today.  I would have driven straight to McD's and bought a mcgriddle- or maybe 2.  Instead, I worked out this morning, I wrote down everything I ate all day and then my hub and I worked out again tonight.  So here's to another week of buckling down, and hopefully seeing better results!

Wii Personal Trainer

It is really hard to work out when you are a SAHM with little ones!  (actually, I feel like it is hard no matter what your situation in life is;)  For my birthday last year, my hub gave me the wii personal trainer.  I LOVE it!  The workouts take 20-30 minutes, it tells you how many calories you are burning, and best of all, you can do all of it from the privacy of your own home!  I always feel kind of self-conscious when I am running on a treadmill at a public gym with lots of mirrors and lots of people!  I have been trying to do it during naptime so I don't have any interruptions- however on Saturday I decided to do it while G was awake (and hub was at work).  She watched me workout while eating her lunch.  Between bites of chicken nugget, she said "mom, after you are done working out, do you want to be skinny like me?"

If only!

Get your activity on!

So besides learning to eat well, the best way to become a Skinnie Twinnie is to exercise. Right now, my husband and I are working out everyday at our apartment gym. It's become a habit, and we both feel great! But, I realize that not everyone can do this. Whether it's the cost of a gym (ours is included with the apartment) or the time you can't commit on a day to day basis (kids, work, etc.). But there are plenty of alternatives!

If you have a wii gaming system, there are many different sports/fitness game you can play. To name a few, wii fit, wii fit plus, dance dance revolution. The last one I mentioned is really fun! It can be addicting- I once played for 6 hours on a Saturday! I think I lost almost 4 lbs that particular week.

Tonight, my husband and I are going ice skating at Centennial Olympic Park in Atlanta. I am really excited. It's a fun way to exercise! Depending on how many times I fall, I am counting on being really sore tomorrow. :)

My husband and I actually met through mutual friends playing in a sand volleyball league. We played for a whole 3 years or so before moving to Atlanta. I loved it- it's a way to be social and to obviously meet other people! We also played on many softball teams. So, naturally I want to continue this trend in our new city! But I don't know anyone here who is already on a team. I found a website called http://www.sportsvite.com/ . I would equate it to the sports version of dating online or craigslist or something. On my profile, I specified which sports I am interested in playing and then people can contact you for needs they might have on their own teams. I am happy to announce that we just officially joined a softball team! Now we just have to wait on volleyball to come through.

So to all- happy exercising- in whichever capacity you choose!!

Starbuck's Skinny Vanilla Latte

As I was waiting for Costco to open today (I am never early for anything since having my second child, so this was a first) I saw across the parking lot a drive thru Starbucks.  It has been a loooooooooong time since I have gotten a coffee there, and for many reasons.  1) I don't really like coffee.  I need lots of sugar and syrups put in my coffee in order for me to drink it. 2) Budget 3) Diet
But I decided to kill some time and pull on up to the drive-thru.  And what do you know, but it was as if they knew this "skinnietwinnie" was coming, because there was a beautiful sign on the intercom that said Skinny Vanilla Latte, just 90 calories!  I had to get it, and it was pretty yummy(for a coffee).  So later, I went on their website and found that they have quite a few drinks for under 100 calories!  Have a look and see what you think: Starbucks low cal drinks.

My Weigh-in and a delicious beginning

I am a bit disappointed to report that I only lost 1 lb this week.  I can blame some of it on my disastrous weekend, but I have to see where else I can make some changes.  I am going to cut my daily intake by 2 points (100 caloris) and exercise more.  If I keep this up I am going to have to start calling this blog Skinnie Twinnie/Fat Twinnie!
I start this week with new devotion.  My breakfast was amazing- my mother in law gave me this idea- she made it for me when she visited last year.  This was about 5-6 points (about 300 calories).

Nonstick spray
Sandwhich Thins
Slice of cheese
Slice of turkey (or ham, or whatever is low in fat)
1/2 cup Southwestern style eggbeaters
Little bowl, about the same size circumfrence as the bread (in pictures later)

1. Toast the bread.  I like putting them back to back in the same slot.  If you put one in each slot, they tend to bend.

2. Spray the bowl with nonstick spray, and pour 1/2 cup of the eggbeaters into it.  Microwave on high for a minute, until it looks like this:

I took this picture as soon as the timer went off- it won't stay this high for long!

3. Once bread is out of the toaster, top each side- one with cheese and one with your choice of meat, and microwave on high for 20 seconds or so.  Then add the cooked eggbeaters and....................

4.  Try your hardest not to scarf it down in 1 bite!  Yum yum, can't wait for my next one for breakfast!  From start to finish, this probably took me about 3 minutes to make.  Perfect for a crazy morning, and so healthy!

The other white meat..

is pork! As Moe had mentioned before, chicken does get old. So, I have a WW recipe that was pretty tasty! It's called Smothered Pork Chops with Onion Gravy.
Ingredients: 4- 6oz bone-in pork loin chops, trimmed, 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp olive oil, 2 sweet onions- thinly sliced, 1/4 cup water, 2 tsp all-purpose flour, 1 cup reduced- sodium beef broth, 1 tsp whole-grain dijon mustard, 1 Tsb chopped fresh thyme
1. Sprinkle the chops with the salt and pepper. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add chops and cook, turning occasionally until browned, about 5 minutes. Transfer to plate.
2. Add onions and water to the skillet; bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered. Stir occasionally until onions are tender, 12-15 minutes.
3. Sprinkle the onions with flouir, cook, stirring constantly for 1 minute. Add broth, mustard, and thyme, bring to a boil until sauce thickens.
Return chops to skillet. Reduce heat and simmer until chops are heated through.

253 calories, 11g fat, 6 points

I served with broccoli. It was yummy! As you can probably tell, the plate looks small. It's actually a salad plate. I find this helps with portion control. The plate looks really full, so it's easy to "trick" your mind that you ate more than you did.
Anyway, I have good news to report from this week's weigh-in. I lost 2.8 lbs! So that brings my total to 4.2. Slow and steady wins the race, right? At this point, I am exercising everyday for a half hour, eating healthy and enjoying it! It has turned into a habit, which is nice. Anyway, until next time- happy dieting!

A disastrous weekend makes for a very nervous girl!

This weekend was disastrous!  I used up all of my extra points on Friday and Saturday night(not uncommon), and then Sunday night happened.  One of my hub's friends came over for dinner and we all got to drinking wine and beers, and it went all downhill from there.  Here is the problem with drinking alcohol: it lowers your inhibitions.  Duh, right?  I'm talking about food inhibitions!  I had 2 glasses of wine, and all of a sudden I turned into this crazed food-foraging idiot that ate anything in sight.  Tortilla chips, white chocolate chips, and then er, more beer.  I have been an angel since then, I even worked out tonight!  But it still makes me really nervous for my first weigh-in tomorrow.  I am anxious to see how it goes!

Yesterday's Meals

I am excited to report that we got our first email!  Thanks Deb for the advice and encouragement!

In other news:
I get so sick of chicken and vegetables when I am dieting (and by I, I mean my husband).  So I have got to venture out and find other recipes that are low in fat, but high in flavor.  Last night, I started out with a childhood favorite- Turkey Pie.  Its easy to make and so, so yummy.  So yummy in fact, that my husband requested me to make it for his office potluck a few weeks ago!

Turkey Pie
2 T Olive oil
1 clove garlic, minced
1 onion, chopped
1/2 # ground turkey
1 small tart apple, unpeeled, diced
1/2 tsp. dried sage, crumbled
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. salt
freshly ground black pepper
1 egg, beaten
1 frozen pie crust

Heat oil in skillet. Saute garlic, onion over medium heat @ 5 minutes.  Add ground turkey; break up using wooden spoon.  Brown turkey; spoon off fat. Remove from heat. Add apple, sage, cinnamon, s & p to taste.  Let cool. Add egg and stir.  Spoon filling into pie crust. Bring up excess dough, folding it in toward center to create a wide border.  Bake pie in 350 degrees 30-40 minutes. Remove and let stand 5 minutes before serving.

I made it during naptime, but didn't bake it until later.  I popped it in the oven right as Chris started his commute home.  I calculated the caloric intake, and one serving is 6 points, or 300 calories.  This pie has 8 servings.
Also, yesterday I slow cooked a bunch (like 12 lbs) of chicken after reading this.  After it was all done, deboned, and shredded I froze the cooked chicken and now I can pull it out when I have a recipe that calls for already cooked chicken.  After that I made stock with all the left over juices and bones-perfect for soups.  I forsee a lot of soups in the near future- becasue they fill you up and are usually low in fat!  Yesterday was a food making frenzy!  Now I am on to my biggest challenge- the weekend.  I can always stick to the diet plan during the week, but weekends are just so hard!  Until then, keep those emails coming!

My first weigh-in

OOOF.  I have gained weight since this summer.  So sad!  I'm not going to admit my weight to the blog world, I just can't do it.  I have enough trouble admitting it to my now WAY skinnier twinnie, Shan.  Let's suffice it to say that I need to lose 30 lbs, but would love to lose 50 total.  Anything after 30 will be gravy.  And that is probably the only time I will mention gravy on this blog!
My husband's family decided to do a biggest loser competition for the next 4 months.  Couples will be competing for about $500, so that will help with the motivation again.  Shan and her hub are participating as well, so there is even more at stake now!
My plan of attack this time around is writing EVERYTHING I eat down.  I have weight watchers points trackers that will help me keep track of all the food I eat.  It also helps me keep track of how much water I drink, how many fruits and veggies I eat, etc.  I have 37 points per day right now, 10 of which I am alotted because I am breastfeeding.  A point is roughly 50 calories, so I am basically on a 1,850 calorie per day diet.  Now, as my weight goes down and as I breastfeed less, so will my daily points.  So, on top of writing everything down, I am going to start working out as well.  I will take it slow at first (like maybe once a week hehe?) and work my way up.
I found a great website today while looking for recipe ideas for my meal plan.  It is now on the blog list to the right.  Hope it is going well for all you dieters out there!

Portion Control

Portion control is a huge key to losing weight. How many times do you go back for seconds, whether it's the main dish or a side? This is the hardest at restaurants. I usually try and eat half. You never know how many calories/fat etc. is in your food exactly. My husband and I went out to eat last night, and it was so hard!! The name of my husband's burger, you ask? The Coronary. Yeah, it was massive. We were at a famous burger joint here in Atlanta called the Vortex.
Anyway, I digress. As Maureen discussed earlier, we are not posting our weights. But, I can let everyone know, that I did lose 1.8 lbs from last week! (I weigh in at Weight Watchers on Wednesdays) That is a good start. It's hard because based on my weight and height (and the fact that I am not breast feeding), I only get 22 points! Which is about 1100 calories per day. Whew. But, you also have a weekly bank of 35 points that you can use for whatever you want. You can spread it out over every day, or save it for a big night out or something. Mine are usually reserved for alcohol. :) With the Biggest Loser competition, the stakes are even higher! But this will be another great motivational tool. My husband and I don't want to lose that $125 we put in for it- that's a lot of money! We also signed up for Warrior Dash here in GA. The race in itself isn't so bad (3.2 miles) but there are a bunch of obstacles in the last mile or so- jumping over fire, bobbing under water, going through the mud under barbed wire, etc. It should be fun! This also coincides with the Biggest Loser- which will last about 4 months. Whew. Anyway, enough for now, I hope everyone can use our enthusiasm to go lose weight!

A Partner in Crime

It is true Shan, dieting and exercising is so much easier when you have someone to do it with you!  For Christmas, I signed my husband up for Warrior Dash, a running series involving demanding terrain while conquering extreme obstacles.  So he needs to get in shape!  Which means it will be an easy way for me to get motivated.  Any little motivation will help!  LOVE it when my hubster is on board too!
I am writing this little bloggity blog from the beautiful Napa Valley, where my inlaws are from.  I will be here until the end of the week.  It is really hard to eat healthfully when you are on vacation, so I am doing what I can to exercise to offset the wine tasting, birthday dinners, and crab feed (all weknesses)I will have accomplished this whole week!  We are going on a hike to take in some of the beautiful sights and sounds of Napa later today, so I hope that will help.  I will be down to business come Monday, so watch out!
Until then, stay classy blog world!

So, I worked out for the 3rd time...

this week!! I am way too proud of myself, not to mention sore. One good thing, my husband informed me the day before New Year's that he is on the weight loss train. Having a work out buddy is the best way to stay motivated. And it also helps when you eat/make meals together. Awesome low calorie recipe that I made the other night: Diet Coke Chicken. 4 chicken breast, one 12oz diet coke and a cup of Ketchup. Brown chicken on both sides then add the other ingredients and cook for 40 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through. Voila! I cooked up some brown rice with it. Tomorrow is the big weigh-in! I can't believe I am going to share my weight with the world! Stay tuned!

Just thought you should know...

About me:
I am 27 and happily married to my college sweetheart, Chris. We have two beautiful baby girls- G is 2 1/2 years old and E is 8 months old. We live in Dallas. Last year was my 5th year of teaching 3rd graders. I quit my job in May to stay at home. I mostly love staying at home, I sometimes miss teaching and planning and talking to adults on a regular basis!  I plan to go back someday.  I grew up watching my mom do weight watchers and she still knows how to eat healthfully.  Weight watchers is what we know, so that's what Shan and I will stick to.  I have a wonderful family!  I have 2 other sisters and a brother, which makes me one of 5.  My husband is the oldest of 10 and its always a party at their house.  I have always, always loved food. I can always eat, even if I am not hungry.

Why I need to lose weight::
I am 27 years old.  27 years old people!!!!  I could stand to lose up to 45 pounds.  I am still wearing maternity clothes, most of which are black-remember black is slimming!  (why do you think this blog is black??)  This summer, when I am trying to survive the hot Texas summer with my two little ones, you will find us at the pool.  And I would like for you to find me at the pool without a t-shirt and shorts covering me up!  I will want a real tan.  I want to feel good about body again, like I did about 25 lbs ago.  I know how to lose weight- knowing is the easy part.  Its the actual DOING that is hard for me.  This blog will help me DO!

I could probably go on and on here, but here are foods that I have trouble saying no to:
ice cream
mexican food
bread and (real) butter
hot cocoa
any and all chocolate
